This is a article that is going to cover oilfield equipment. The are many parts to a drilling rig. I want to cover in this article is the top section of a drilling rig . There are far to many sections of a rig to cover, so I am just going to give a summary of the top of a drilling rig.drilling equipment I am going to write a few article's covering the drilling rig from top to bottom. The top being the crown block to the bottom being the Bore Hole.
The crown block is a piece of equipment that is located a the top of the rig. This is usually were a American flag is placed. The crown block is a piece of equipment that uses pulley to support the weight of all the line pipe that is going down the drill hole. A pulley system is used to divert the massive amount of mass that the crown block has to support. Pulley sytemwill be connected with a large diameter wire to a traveling block. This is all held up by a large metal mast. the metal mast is what looks like a antenna tower.
A traveling block is all most like a crown block. Being the purpose of the traveling block is to use pulleys to support a huge amount of equipment mass that will be lowered down the bore hole. To give you an example of the cost of a crown block, they range from about $14,000 USD to approximate $80,000 USD. The weight that a traveling block can support will range from about 400,000 thousand pounds up to 900,000 pounds.This example should give and idea about the huge amount of equipment weight that is lowered down a drilling rigs hole. Of course this is for the land drilling rigs.
The traveling block in then connected to a top dive. There are 2 different types a land rig a top drive and a rotary table/Kelly. The Top drive drilling rig is one that uses a power swivel or top drive in order to do the drilling. A rotary table or Kelly does the same thing but is located on the rigs main plat form. The Top drive will be used by the traveling block. The top drive rig is more expensive but is considered to be a more effective rig , taking less people to operate.
