How To Write Thrillers

Scott Turow and John Grisham are great authors of thrillers. If you want to write thrillers the first you need to do is study the good works of other thriller authors and writers. Some more good thriller writers are James Patterson, Jeffrey Deaver, Patricia Cornwell, Jonathan Kellerman, and Sarah Peretsky. You can find a wealth of books and magazines loaded with good thriller stories in your local bookstore or online. When you read good thrillers from good writers you will be able to better produce and write great thrillers yourself. Thrillers are high on the bestseller’s lists and they can be fun to write.

First, you need to get to know this genre. You can start by using the method I stated above: reading other best-selling thrillers. Explore the history of thrillers, how thrillers fit into today’s society, and the sub-genres of thriller writing.

Once you have an idea for your story you should set up a simple outline for your book or short story, even if it is just in your head. Every writer has his or her own methods of starting a story, so I’m not going to tell you how you should do it. If writing a simple outline works for you, then do that. If just writing a first draft as a skeleton story work for you, then do that. Whatever works best for you is what you should do.

Now that you have your idea laid out you need to do some research. If your story includes crime you might want to do some research on crime. You can do so by interviewing your local police, reading books from your local library, or by doing some research online. It is important to get to know the big chunks of your story so you can write about them fluently. Plus, interviewing people can give you some more really great ideas!

You may also want to study law, medical practices, and police procedures. All of these things may come into play in your story and you should know what you are talking about. Having this knowledge will help you get your story out in a smooth manner. I’m not advising that you should go out and get a degree in any of these. You just conduct some interviews, read up on the procedures, and have some references available to you while you are writing.

Thrillers are full of suspense, scares, twists, action, and gore. This is what the thriller reader wants to experience while reading a thriller. Learn how to make your readers feel and experience all of these things when they read your book. If you are not an experienced writer you may want to take some online classes on writing fiction. This will help you hone your craft by learning how to create memorable characters, surprise your readers, bring the action, and make them keep flipping those pages.

With these simple steps you can be writing your own thrillers in no time.
